The Recycle Santa Fe Art Festival
Marking its 21st running November 15th through the 17th, the Recycle Santa Fe Art Festival began in 1999 as the brainchild of Mark Dabelstein and Joe Buffalo Nickels. The event started as the Recycled Art Market, a showcase for artwork made from 75% or more recycled/reused/repurposed materials that remain the heart of today’s festival.
Many of the artists who participate in the Recycled Art Market also enter a work in the festival’s Juried Art Exhibition, which also takes place in the Santa Fe Community Convention Center.
Another one-of-a-kind feature of the Recycled Santa Fe Art Festival is the Trash Fashion & Costume Contest, which goes down at the Convention Center at 7 PM on November 15th. (The Art Market will be running for two hours prior to that.) Here again, those dressing to impress for the “runway” will be sporting outfits made from at least 75% recycled/reused products.
The whole affair is both delightful and impressive, and a great showcase for how a bit of creativity and resourcefulness can turn what might otherwise end up in a landfill or similarly discarded into a genuine piece of artwork (or high fashion!). It’s also not a bad spot to load up on some absolutely unique holiday gifts—or, at least, a memorable souvenir from your Santa Fe getaway.
