Georgia O’Keeffe Museum

For more than a few people all around the world, the idea of New Mexico calls to mind the images of Georgia O’Keeffe, one of the foremost American painters of the 20th century.

As a guest of ours at La Posada de Santa Fe Resort & Spa—a luxury resort which takes the astonishing landscapes and rich cultures of New Mexico as its guiding aesthetic—you’re uniquely situated to explore the legacy of this fiercely independent and groundbreaking artist.

We’re mere minutes from the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, which since 1997 has shed fascinating insight into O’Keeffe’s life while showcasing a dazzling array of her masterful work.

Born in Wisconsin, O’Keeffe lived, studied, and worked widely, but New Mexico had become her spiritual and part-time home by the 1930s and her permanent one by 1949, following the death of her husband, photographer Alfred Stieglitz. She maintained a home in Abiquiu, New Mexico and also lived and painted at the nearby Ghost Ranch, in view of the enigmatic mesa Cerro Pedernal that O’Keeffe evoked in so many pieces. She moved to Santa Fe in 1984 and died here two years later at an impressive 98 years old.

The Museum’s Collections

At the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum you can admire, up close and in person, thousands of O’Keeffe’s pieces, including oil paintings, sketches, and watercolors. Besides these artworks—which span most of the 20th century, from 1901 to 1984—the collections also include many photographs of O’Keeffe, some of her tools and other personal possessions, and many postcards, letters, and other archives.

Besides this main campus, the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum also manages O’Keeffe’s Home and Studio in Abiquiu, New Mexico, a research center, and other O’Keeffe-related holdings.

Upcoming Events at the Museum

The Georgia O’Keeffe Museum also holds regular classes, lectures, and other events, and the upcoming weeks are packed with enticing programs. On June 28, for instance, the “LOO’L Closer: Art Talk at Lunchtime” will focus on one of the pieces of arts currently on display at the museum, while July 5’s “Breakfast with O’Keeffe: Personal Reflections on O’Keeffe” will feature the intimate recollections of Carol Merrill, who worked for O’Keeffe for much of the 1970s.

July 17, meanwhile, will see a daylong celebration of an institutional milestone: the 20th anniversary of the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum.
