Luxury Hotel near Santa Fe Opera

Santa Fe may be one of the smaller state capitals in the USA, but it’s a city that nonetheless comes formidably and famously stacked with world-class arts and culture. One of the treasures of that arts-and-culture scene is most certainly the Santa Fe Opera, a beloved institution whose 2018 season you’ve got easy access to as a guest of ours here at La Posada de Santa Fe Resort & Spa.

Introducing the Santa Fe Opera

John O. Crosby established the Santa Fe Opera on a 76-acre guest ranch north of the city back in 1956. The story goes that Crosby and Jack Purcell fired guns—some say a yacht cannon—to identify the most auspicious spot on the grounds from an acoustics perspective.

Since its launch, the Santa Fe Opera has presented 164 operas by some 80 composers, spread across on 2,000-odd performances that’ve included an impressive share of world and American premieres. Given the caliber of the productions and the open-air Crosby Theatre and the singular beauty of the high-desert surrounds, it’s no surprise the company has such a stellar national reputation.

The 2018 Season at Santa Fe Opera

The operas on offer this season cover some marvelous territory. There’s the Los Alamos saga Doctor Atomic (through August 16th), evoking the lead-up to the first atomic bomb being detonated in 1945 based on a diverse array of source material, including declassified government archives. There’s Gioachino Rossini’s comedic The Italian Girl in Algiers (through August 17th), Voltaire’s iconic Candide(through August 25th), and Puccini’s Madame Butterfly (through August 24th), which anchored the Santa Fe Opera’s inaugural 1957 season. From July 28th through August 23rd, meanwhile, the Opera presents Richard Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos in a brand-new production by Tim Albery.

The Santa Fe Opera also runs a Summer Concert Series at multiple venues. Upcoming performances include a concert at Santa Fe’s Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi at 7 PM on Thursday, July 19th, and “Cabaret: The Multi-verses of Bernstein,” a celebration of legendary composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein’s 100th birthday at Meow Wolf at 8:30 PM on Thursday, July 26th, which will feature soprano Amy Owens and pianist James Lesniak.
