Julia Staab

In 1854, Abraham Staab emigrated from his native Germany to the United States, where he followed the Santa Fe Trail to New Mexico Territory. There he established a trading business with his brother Zadoc and made a fortune. In 1865, he returned to his homeland to marry Julia Schuster, and then brought his new bride back to Santa Fe.

The Staabs built a grand French Second Empire mansion for their home and became a hub of the city’s social scene, Abraham serving as the Santa Fe Chamber of Commerce’s first president (and, the story goes, involving himself with the Santa Fe Ring), and Julia serving as a busy hostess of high society.

Julia died at 52 in 1896, Abraham following her in 1913. But Julia has never truly left La Posada de Santa Fe: Her ghost has been periodically seen in the Staab House, now part of our resort, inspiring coverage from Unsolved Mysteries and other TV shows, visits from local ghost tours, and our own Julia, A Spirited Restaurant & Bar as well as the “Juliarita” margarita, which which you can toast our matron at the cozy and elegant bar we maintain in the old mansion.

Julia: A Friendly & Honored Spirit

For anyone unnerved by the paranormal, allow us to reassure you: The spirit of Julia Staab is, by all accounts, a benevolent one who simply appears to continue to enjoy her grand Santa Fe mansion. And given her gracious hospitality and party-hosting back in the day, we’d like to think she approves of the luxurious accommodations and epicurean delights we shower our guests with here at La Posada de Santa Fe Resort & Spa.

Furthermore, Julia is a faithful denizen of the Staab House: She doesn’t appear in our casitas, so you can rest easy in those gorgeous guestrooms!
