Here’s Where to Find Best Art Hotels in the United States

“Santa Fe is an art lover’s dream. Cerulean skies beam down on an adobe spread and deep reds and browns paint the town in a Southwest patina. In the small town set against a vast high desert, natural beauty primes Santa Fe’s creative drive. La Posada aims to encapsulate this art, offering it to paying pilgrims.

La Posada sets guests in a late 19th-century mansion, a former artist’s refuge where Georgia O’Keefe found the quiet needed to create. Today, it’s an arts haven, housing a huge collection curated by local artist Sara Eyestone. Works from local and nationally recognized artists are everywhere you look at the La Posada, and you can get involved as well with Eyestone’s regular painting workshops, memoir writing classes, and weekly tours.

Outside, the desert vibes continue in a funky downtown with excellent New Mexican cuisine on offer after trips to any of the other several visual excursions.”

The 2022 Top 25 Historic Hotels of America Most Magnificent Gardens List Announced

Comments Off on The 2022 Top 25 Historic Hotels of America Most Magnificent Gardens List Announced

Historic Hotels of America have some of the most magnificent and beautiful storybook gardens. Multigenerational guests select a historic hotel, resort, or inn to explore, experience, and discover their own ever-blossoming memories in beautiful gardens where multigenerational hosts have cared for gardens over the centuries. Many the hotels feature grounds designed by legendary landscape architects Frederick Law Olmsted and his son, Frederick Law Olmsted Jr. Several historic hotels on this list employ beekeepers to ensure their gardens remain pollinated and thriving, and even cultivate honey from their own apiaries to make house meads and keep their restaurants supplied with sweet, fragrant garnishes. More than a few hotels recognized here adhere to a “seed to table” or “field to table” philosophy, growing their own vegetables and herbs next door to their signature restaurants. Numerous life-long memories of special occasions celebrated in the gardens of historic hotels include romantic getaways, romantic proposals, honeymoons, anniversaries, and family reunions. Whether you are sharing a meal, a vow, or a stroll, these magnificent gardens of Historic Hotels of America will make your next tranquil getaway one you will never forget.

[…]

Set on six beautifully landscaped acres in Santa Fe’s downtown, La Posada de Santa Fe was originally constructed as a mansion known as The Staab House. La Posada has been a member of Historic Hotels of America since 2019 and is among the most exclusive destinations in New Mexico. La Posada’s history harkens back to a German émigré named Abraham Staab and his wife, Julia. Abraham had specifically arrived in Santa Fe in the mid-1850s, after taking the arduous journey along the Santa Fe Trail with his family. The gardens at La Posada de Santa Fe trace their history back to Julia Staab and the garden she planted in the late 1800s. Today, there are many walkways for guests to explore a variety of fruit trees, walnut trees, hickory trees, elm trees, aspen trees, and cherry blossom trees. Some of these historical trees are over 130 years in age. Guests can view the beauty of natural grasses with a variety of roses, all shades of lilacs, butterfly bushes, and daffodils. The best time to see the most vibrant blooms is from May to September.

As many in the film industry have come to learn, the Land of Enchantment is a fantastic place to make television and movies. That would be true based on the quality and variety of the scenery alone, let alone all of the financial incentives and logistical resources.

Meanwhile, you’ll find the perfect accommodations for film production crews and casts at La Posada de Santa Fe Resort & Spa, offering expansive and well-appointed accommodations and on-site amenities in the New Mexico capital, just steps from the iconic Santa Fe Plaza.

The Appeal of New Mexico as a Filming & Post-Production Destination

Defined by piercing beauty and impressive variety, the New Mexico landscape is as cinematic as they come. Rimrock escarpments, dreamlike mesas and buttes, snow-cloaked mountains and high forests, endless grasslands and surreal dunes: This is countryside that embodies the popular vision of the American West. The natural terrain may be the showstopper draw for the camera lens, but there’s also the manmade sightlines, which include everything from modern urban settings and classic Southwestern adobe architecture to towns (and ghost towns) that look as if they’re still firmly inhabiting the Old West.

Then there’s the fact that New Mexico has the biggest production crew between Los Angeles and New York and offers an enticing lineup of rebates and incentives. Little surprise the state is such a popular destination for makers of TV, movies, music videos, and advertisements.

Ideal New Mexico Film Production Lodgings at La Posada de Santa Fe Resort & Spa

You’ll have everything you need for comfortable accommodations and business resources when you choose La Posada de Santa Fe as your base of operations for a New Mexico film production. Besides our 157 rooms and suites, splendidly Southwestern in their casita-style design, and besides our wide array of on-site amenities—including some of Santa Fe’s finest dining and a topnotch spa—we offer crews a wealth of specific support.

As a guest of ours, you’ll have at your disposal our La Posada de Santa Fe film liaison, with personal film concierge and scouting/location-visit services. That’s all on top of a full business center, varied meeting/event venues, covered garage parking, free Wi-Fi, and other business-oriented on-site amenities, not to mention waived resort fees.

When it comes to unwinding during production or post-production work, you only need to consider our lineup of restaurants and lounges—including our flagship Julia, A Spirited Restaurant & Bar and our Staab House cocktail bar, set in a 19th-century mansion—plus our swimming pool, the ravishing Spa Sage, and our 24-hour fitness center.

We would be more than happy to field any questions you may have about the amenities and hospitality we offer film production crews. We’ve hosted many such outfits over the years and are well versed in the unique needs of the business, and we’d love to show you the same world-class service!

Santa Fe can hold its own with any other city in the country for the fantastic outdoor recreation at its doorstep. The incredibly varied Southwestern landscapes of its hinterland, from canyons and mesas to high plateaus and alpine mountains, are breathtaking; they call to sightseers and adventurers both.

Stunning and inspiring as this countryside is to simply drink in on scenic drives, it yields special rewards to those who enter it on foot. With a boutique casita at La Posada de Santa Fe, you have the perfect springboard for hiking and snowshoeing adventures amid the spectacular terrain that enfolds New Mexico’s capital.

Hiking & Snowshoeing Destinations

You’ve got a lifetime of outdoor destinations to explore on the doorstep of Santa Fe with a La Posada home base. They include the fragrant conifer forests and high peaks of the Sangre de Cristos to the east of the city: the southernmost range of the Rocky Mountains, which include the great 12,000- and 13,000-foot peaks of the Pecos Wilderness. Westward rises the Pajarito Plateau and the Jemez Mountains, a ravishing realm that includes such nationally renowned attractions as Bandelier National Monument, with its ancient indigenous cliff dwellings, and the Edenic parkland of the Valles Caldera National Preserve.

Then there are the sublime savannas and sandstone outcrops of the Galisteo Basin Preserve, the evocative summits of the Ortiz Mountains, the colorful heights of the Sandias: lovely and wild places that tug at the soul.

In winter, you’ve typically got both lower-elevation hiking and snowshoeing in the higher country to pursue: either activity all the more delightful knowing you’ve got the cozy lavishness of La Posada de Santa Fe, including a well-earned meal and libation at one of our onsite restaurants and the rejuvenation offered at our spa, awaiting you after your day’s adventures!

Guided Hikes & Snowshoes

Multiple outfitters provide guided outdoor adventures out of Santa Fe. We’ll profile one great example in this post: Outspire, which leads both hikes and snowshoes across a broad swath of the city’s great big backyard. Destinations include White Rock Canyon, Tsankawi Mesa, Bandelier, Valles Caldera, the Pecos Wilderness, and the Sangre de Cristos, among others.

Outspire provides a daypack, snacks, water, poncho, and adjustable trekking poles for those joining its hikes, while snowshoers get a pair of fitted snowshoes, gaiters (which buffer your legs and keep snow out of your boots), and poles. For a sample of the geological and ecological wonders and gorgeous backcountry of the Santa Fe area, Outspire’s an awesome choice given you get everything you need to explore with and benefit from the local knowledge and skills of your private guides.

Whether on an independent adventure or a guided foray with a company such as Outspire, we hope you’ll dedicate some time to experiencing the world-class hiking and snowshoeing routes available to you as a La Posada guest!

New Year’s Eve in the Santa Fe Plaza

The fifth edition of Santa Fe’s New Year’s Eve on the Plaza will be underway December 31st in the city’s centuries-old town square, which is just a stone’s throw from La Posada de Santa Fe Resort & Spa.

It’s a lovely festival that draws together community members and out-of-town visitors alike. Things kick off at 8 PM as the Plaza warms up with heaters and crackling bonfires of piñon wood, the aroma of which summons the very essence of the Southwestern landscape. The Santa Fe Bandstand will come alive with music from a variety of performers: Sol Fire, Fun Adixx, Alex Maryol, and Chango.

Meanwhile, courtesy of the Kiwanis Club of Santa Fe, there’ll be free hot chocolate on offer as well as New Mexico’s official (and delicious) state cookie, the bizcochito, plus a memorial banner upon which anyone can write goals, dreams, wishes, and other aspirations for the New Year (and the new decade!).

There’ll be a number of food trucks on hand to attend to appetites as revelers one and all enjoy the merry atmosphere, live entertainment, and beautifully decorated Plaza, a truly iconic city center.

The formal countdown to 2020’s grand entry will be launched at 11:45 PM by the mayor and other city officials. At the stroke of midnight, a traditional Zia symbol will be raised to the flashing extravagance of fireworks, and the crowd will sing “Auld Land Syne” and “Las Mañanitas.”

It’s a magical way to usher in the New Year, gathered together on the hallowed ground of the Santa Fe Plaza, heart of America’s oldest capital city for so many generations.

Join us here at La Posada de Santa Fe Resort & Spa and take in some of the prodigious festive magic that defines the holiday season in the New Mexico capital! While you’re enjoying our boutique Southwestern accommodations and amenities, you’ll be well poised to sample Santa Fe’s holiday events and installations, a few of which we’ll spotlight in today’s blog post.

Holiday Lighting Event on the Plaza

On November 29th, you can take part in a time-honored holiday tradition over in the historic Santa Fe Plaza just a stone’s throw from the La Posada boutique-scape. Some 10,000 lights create a dreamy holiday wonderland in this hallowed center of the city. They’re set to be lit at 6:30 PM, but there’ll be plenty of enticements before that main event, including live entertainment in the Bandstand, the arrival (by vintage fire truck, no less) of Santa and Mrs. Claus around 4 PM, and the lighting of farolitos soon thereafter.

GLOW: A Winter Lights Event at the Santa Fe Botanical Garden

More lit-up loveliness will define the verdurous grounds of the Santa Fe Botanical Garden this December with the annual GLOW installation. Charming light displays and arrangements will be spread throughout the garden, and open on select evenings from 5 to 8 PM: November 30th to December 1st, December 6th through the 8th, December 13th through the 15th, December 20th through the 23rd, and December 26th through the 31st. There’s a special Preview Party, meanwhile, on the night of November 29th.

Besides all the twinkling setups, GLOW will feature live music, holiday drinks, and flybys from Santa Claus.

Christmas at the Palace

On December 13th, the Palace of the Governors and the New Mexico History Museum will host (for the 37th time!) this free annual family-friendly holiday soiree, complete with cookies, hot cider, seasonal crafts, piñatas, live tunes, and yet more appearances by that busy guy from the North Pole (and his main squeeze). Christmas at the Palace also features an antique printing press in operation.

Las Posadas

Two days later (December 15th), the Plaza comes alive with the traditional Hispanic festival of Las Posadas, where Mary and Joseph’s quest for a place to bear forth the Baby Jesus will be evoked in a candle-lit processional that ends up in the courtyard of the Palace of the Governors. Some devils will be involved, too, just for good measure…

Wine Selection at Julia Restaurant

There are many epicurean pleasures daily on offer at our on-site house of haute cuisineJulia, A Spirited Restaurant & Bar—an establishment named for and honoring the one and only Julia Staab, who hosted many social gatherings here on our grounds back in the day. Along with the elegant and inventive cuisine itself—and the wonderful ambience, the fine lineup of specialty cocktails, and more—those pleasures include an exhaustive wine list. Indeed, so extensive and varied is our La Posada de Santa Fe wine cellar that we make one of the great destinations in the New Mexico capital for the most discerning of oenophiles!

Surveying the Wine-scape at La Posada de Santa Fe Resort & Spa

With a wine list some 12 pages long, you won’t exactly be hurting for options in the grape department at Julia, A Spirited Restaurant & Bar. Wherever your tastes land on the wine spectrum, you’ll be delighted by what our in-house sommeliers have on hand!

Perhaps you’re feeling in the mood for a white wine, in which case you might consider a Pino Grigio from Ca’bolani, Italy or the Conundrum White Blend from the California vineyards of Charles F Wagner. If the occasion calls for a little “sparkle,” so to speak, maybe you’ll opt for the Moet & Chandon Imperial, Veuve Cliquot Ponsardin, or Mionetto Prosecco.

If an impeccable red is what the doctor ordered, consider our Merlot from Leonetti Cellar in Washington’s Walla Walla Valley, any of our numerous Robert Mondavi Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon vintages, or the Hartford Court Zinfandel from Highwire Vineyard in the Russian River Valley. Among our high-end collection of Pinot Noirs, meanwhile, you’ve got a local choice from Gruet Winery right here in New Mexico.

Naturally we’ve barely scratched the surface of the wine-scape here at Julia, A Spirited Restaurant & Bar, and of course your server will be happy to walk you through the decision-making process if you’d like to more thoroughly explore the wine list.

The 2019 Santa Fe Wine & Chile Fiesta

We can’t wrap up this vino-oriented blog post without mentioning the upcoming Santa Fe Wine & Chile Fiesta, which draws some of the finest winemakers in the country to the New Mexico capital alongside superlative chefs and restaurateurs. On Thursday, September 26th, Julia itself will be host for one of the Santa Fe Wine & Chile Fiesta shindigs: a winery dinner pairing Executive Chef Tom Kerpon’s dishes with a variety of wines from the esteemed Elk Cove.

Read more about the 2019 Santa Fe Wine & Chile Fiesta—which runs for the entire week through September 29th—in this previous La Posada de Santa Fe post.

Celebrate the Gifts of the Vine at La Posada de Santa Fe Resort & Spa

We hope you’ll join us soon here at La Posada de Santa Fe and enjoy a meal (or three) at our Julia, A Spirited Restaurant & Bar, the exceptional culinary experience of which comes anchored by a globe-spanning wine list of the finest quality. Chin, chin!
